Restaurant Review | Frida Mexican Cuisine – Dearborn, Mich.
Mexican cuisine in Metro Detroit consists mostly of national chains and their delicious but very Americanized tacos, burritos and chimichangas. But, a new family-owned-and-operated restaurant in Dearborn, Mich., brings a little authenticity to the Motor City’s suburban foodie scene.
At Frida Mexican Cuisine, you’ll find classic favorites — enchiladas, tacos and burritos. But, you’ll also find some more authentic Mexican dishes. It’s a nice change from Mexican Fiesta (as much as I love that restaurant) and the national Tex-Mex chain restaurants.
Tucked into a small space along a stretch of Michigan Avenue dotted with bars and restaurants, Frida is a hidden gem that local foodies will appreciate for its interesting artwork and Frida Kahlo portraits, attentive customer service, and menu offering specialty and authentic Mexican dishes.
My inaugural visit to Frida was two weeks ago, when temperatures reached the mid-80s Fahrenheit, which is quite unusual for early May in Michigan.
Fruity sangria cooled down an unseasonably hot day.
My mom and I began our meal with a carafe of red sangria. Unlike sangria at many Spanish and Mexican restaurants, there was no fruit floating in the glass. Instead, the drink had a thicker texture like the fruit had been blended into the beverage. However it was made, it was delicious and very refreshing in the evening heat.
Our meal began with complimentary chips & salsa, of course.
Fresh, crunchy tortilla chips are served with a tomato-based mild salsa and a spicier salsa with layers of flavorful heat. I like a little spice, but I usually shy away from spicy salsas at Mexican restaurants. But, I just couldn’t stop eating either of these salsas.
Delicious entrees were filling portions.
For my dinner entree, I ordered grilled fish tacos served with a mango salsa, Mexican rice and potatoes. The small trio of fish tacos were topped with onions and green and red peppers.
My mom ordered the ginormous shrimp burrito topped with a tasty ranchero sauce, avocado slices, dollops of sour cream and green olive slices. It was such a large dish that she took half of it home! I think I’ll be ordering this burrito the next time I dine here.
