Photo Friday: Fourth of July barbecue in Michigan

Like many American families, my family gathered around the dining room table yesterday to celebrate our country’s Independence Day with a traditional summertime meal in America — barbecue.

Initially, my mom was just going to make a couple salads and dad was going to grill some burgers. Then extended family was invited. Friends stopped by.  And the menu expanded to include cheeseburgers, turkey sliders, hot dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, crab salad, jello salad, patriotic fruit salad and baked beans. As if we weren’t all full to the brim after dinner, Mom then pulled out a yellow cake covered in butter cream frosting with red, white and blue sprinkles. The candles were lit, and “Happy Birthday” was sung off-key — to my sister who turned 24 this week, not to America.
