Nashville notes from Ashlyn and Mike

Maybe it’s because I love country music. Maybe it’s because I’ve always wanted to own cowboy boots. Or, maybe it’s because I want to boot-stomp a line dance at a Music City honky-tonk. Whatever the reason, I know Nashville, Tenn., is near the top of my bucket list of travel destinations.

My friends Ashlyn and Mike — who recently became engaged (yay!) — were in Nashville for a long weekend in mid-June. Although the weekend involved some work for Mike, the Ithaca-based couple hit the town. Hoping to visit Nashville myself, I had a few questions for them about their trip.

Favorite place visited: Rippy’s Bar

Best meal:

Cornmeal Fried Louisiana Alligator with creamy roasted jalapeño aioli

Calamari cornmeal dusted served with lime cocktail sauce

Spicy Shrimp & Cheddar Grits with mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes, scallions and Tabasco butter

Grilled 8oz. Hangar Steak with potato hash, fried egg, buttered asparagus and hollandaise

Cheesecake of the Day (Chef’s mind changes a lot): Tagalong (Girl Scout cookie)

Nashville is Music City. Did you catch any live shows?

There was live music at each bar we visited. Best fiddler ever at Rippy’s.

Any Taylor Swift sightings?

I wish!

What should future visitors bring with them?

Cowboy boots (says Ashlyn) and assless chaps, drinking shoes, and your singing voice (says Mike)

What advice would you pass along to future Nashville visitors?

Best place for live music (and apparently bachelorette parties)

Best airport for delays

Tootsies, 422 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203 — More live music!
